In Which I Am Shamefully Behind in Reading

I still have two books to write reviews for (both of which are by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) but I haven't read much of anything this past week. I was trying to get through a book that I've decided to give up on for the time being and am starting C.S. Lewis' Perelandra today. I should have a review of A Study in Scarlet for you guys by Tuesday or Wednesday.

How have things been going for the rest of you? I feel so cut off because I'm only able to get to a computer when I'm at work.

  1. I feel overwhelmed -- I need to get through a bunch of books, and wish I could somehow absorb the words through my fingers (like Dark Willow in Buffy). Hoping to get more reading time in this week / weekend.

  2. I am definitely in a reading funk also. I did catch up on my reviews today, but that's only because I made myself. I really didn't want to. I blame the heat. Being over 100 here is making me very lazy and apathetic. I see a change coming around the bend. We all have funks; it's just a matter of moving beyond them. Keep at it!

  3. I concur with tfrances. A reading Funk for me. its been 106-108 in my state and it is really doing a mental job on me. if i go to the shower one more time alone with everyone else in the house i'm going to need to take a collection just for the water bill. can' wait to get my swimming pool installed for now i'm dipping in the clubhouse pool.
Gabriel, the book you could not finish how long (pages) did you go before you just gave up?

  4. I am in the same boat ... no Internet access at home. :(

I just can't seem really settle into a book. I joined an online group read of Dune by Frank Herbert that's really sparked some interesting discussion. I think I'd enjoy it even more if I had some profound thoughts of my own to share. Alas, the only thing I can think about is getting out of this heat and humidity and into air conditioning.

  5. Been seriously plowing through stuff here. Reading 7-8 books a month. I've just had been maximizing my reading and writing time lately. Hopefully you can do the same soon.

  6. We're missing you! I seem to be behind on everything I'm supposed to be reading but still getting through other books. I think I might have to ease of a structured approach as it only puts me off!

  7. Jo: I know what you mean. I'm not anywhere near getting through what I wanted to for this month and there's only a little under two weeks left. Oops. I think I'll try to devote as much time as possible this week and next to reading and then I'll have a bunch of stuff saved up that needs to be reviewed. I'm hoping to be back up and running on my own computer by the end of the month so hopefully August won't be as bad.

tfrances: The heat has definitely been a factor, although my changed work schedule shares part of the blame as well. When I work mostly at night there isn't as much to do as there is during the day, so I get more reading done. I'm also able to stay up later and read more. I think once this month is over I should be back to normal.

Sidne: The first summer that I lived in my current apartment, my roommates and each averaged about three showers a day. The apartment used to be the attic so it's not insulated and it's insanely hot up there. I got to about page 90 before giving up. I'll go back to it at another time, but there's not point in trying to read something that I'm not interested in when I'm so far behind.

Shaz: I was supposed to reread Dune this month because I wanted to read the whole series (the original six) by the end of this year. I may have to put that off for a while. I'm also behind on all of my challenges, including the one that I'm hosting. :(

Ben: I'm so jealous of you. I think I just need to buckle down and do it.

Ellie: Aw, I miss you guys, too. I just started on Perelandra, so I'll hopefully have it done in the next day or two. Maybe reading an author that I love with jump-start me. :)

  8. I've been quite lucky and have been getting through my tbr pile. I think I am just making up for the fact that I know it won't last when I go back to studying again. Plus it's so muggy here just now that I don't feel much like doing anything else.

Your blog posts are very much missed. I think we all look forward to when you are able to come back to us.

Hope you are enjoying the Arthur Conan Doyle. I haven't read much Sherlock Holmes.

  9. Karen: While I've been fascinated by the character of Sherlock Holmes since I was a kid, I've only just now started reading the Doyle's stories, which is inexplicable, really. I keep meaning to review the two I've read but I keep putting it off for some reason.

I'm glad you're getting through what you wanted to read. I think I'll snap out of this funk soon, but the heat has just not motivated me at all.

I look forward to coming back, too. I miss posting everyday and commenting on people's blogs. :(
