Every Monday, Sheila at Book Journey hosts It's Monday! What Are You Reading? Book bloggers are encouraged to share their past, current, and future reads, as well as what's been going on at their blog in the past week.
This past week on Gabriel Reads has been pretty busy, on the blog as well as in real life. I missed two posts last week (sorry to Jeffrey Lockwood--I'm reading your book, I just haven't finished it yet), but otherwise it was a very productive seven days.
What I Read Last Week:
-Rain Dragon by Jon Raymond
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Anomie by Jeffrey Lockwood
What I'm Reading Next:
-Witchcraft Couture by Katarina West
-Goodhouse by Peyton Marshall
The Week In Review:
Last week started as every week will start: It's Monday! What Are You Reading? On Tuesday, I posted a list of ten of my goals for the year via Top Ten Tuesday. I missed Wednesday, but on Thursday I recommended a ton of books that I think you should all read. Friday was a review of Jon Raymond's Rain Dragon. Finally, on Saturday I posted my interview with Katherine McIntyre.
What to Look for This Week:
This week will see me introducing two new features to Gabriel Reads: the Gabriel Seal of Approval and the Blog of the Week. I'll also be doing a Top Ten Tuesday post, a review of Anomie, an interview with my author husband, and a review of Witchcraft Couture. There's an open day or two this week, so I'm currently working out what to do for those posts.
Have a great week everyone!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
Every Monday, Sheila at Book Journey hosts It's Monday! What Are You Reading?, where bloggers can share what books they've been burying their faces in and other things that have been happening over the last week.
This past week was my first week being back to blogging in 2 years, and I have to say that it was a pretty great week. This week is shaping up to be pretty great, too, so I'll preview what's going on in the next seven days as well as sharing what happened in the previous seven.
What I Read Last Week:
*Channel Blue by Jay Martel
*Snatched by Katherine McIntyre
What I'm Currently Reading:
*Rain Dragon by Jon Raymond
What I'm Reading Next:
*Anomie by Jeffrey Lockwood
*Witchcraft Couture by Katarina West
The Week in Review:
Last week I did a few personal posts--what I've been doing for the last few years and a (way overdue) getting-to-know-me post--in addition to my reviews of Channel Blue and Snatched. I also wrote a post shameless plugging my husband's novel, Reckless Magus. Finally, I discovered Bloglovin' when I took a look at the stats for my blog and saw it as a traffic source.
What to Look for This Week:
Tomorrow is a freebie Top Ten Tuesday post, so I'll be writing about my top ten goals for 2015. Wednesday will be my review of The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic by Emily Croy Baker, which is one of several reviews I'll be posting of books that I read prior to starting this blog back up again. I'll have reviews of Rain Dragon and Anomie as well, Friday and Sunday, respectively. And, most exciting of all, I have not one, but TWO author interviews this week. The first one, on Thursday, is with Donald Schlaich, my husband, author of the aforementioned Reckless Magus. And on Saturday I'll be posting an interview with Katherine McIntyre, the author of Snatched, the first ever winner of the all-new Gabriel Seal of Approval, which will also be introduced in a post this week.
I'll be popping into other IMWAYR posts today, but feel free to tell me in the comments about what you've been doing the last week.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
Welcome back to Gabriel Reads! What better post to kick off its reemergence than It's Monday! What Are You Reading? from Sheila at Book Journey?
Because this is my first real post of the year (and for the last two years), I'm going to give a preview of what's coming up this week in addition to sharing my recent reads.
First things first, though: what have I been reading? Honestly, I've only read one book so far--Channel Blue by Jay Martel. The review will be posted on Wednesday morning, but here's a link to its Amazon page so you can check the book out in advance.
What else is coming up this week? Tomorrow, instead of a Top Ten Tuesday post (which I will start doing again next week), I'll explain where the hell I've been the last two years and what I've been up to. Wednesday is, of course, my first review in a very long time. On Thursday, I'm going to do a bit of a getting-to-know-you post about myself, as I feel like I never really did that before. Friday I'll be reviewing a book that I read before I decided to start blogging again, which will be a pattern for a little while. I read several amazing books in the last year and I want to share them with all of you. On Saturday, I'll be introducing (but not reviewing) a book by someone very near and dear to my heart: my husband. Then on Sunday I'll be reviewing a book I received as a review request.
Whew! Lots of great stuff coming up. I'm super excited to be back in business and I look forward to making 2015 an amazing year of blogginess.
How about everyone else? Tell me what you all have been up to!

I've finally got back into blogging after several weeks away and it feels pretty great. I haven't been blogging in a while but I've still been reading, albeit not as much as I would have liked to. I'm quickly getting to the end of my current read, however, and am hoping to get through at least twelve books this month. I work at a college library so we get vacation when the students do so even with my second job, I still have ample time off to just sit and read.
What I Read Since Last Time:
-The Natural Navigator: A Watchful Explorer's Guide to a Nearly Forgotten Skill by Tristan Gooley
-Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else by Chrystia Freeland
-The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde

I actually had a pretty productive week last week in terms of reading and blogging, although the last few days I haven't done much due to having to work 36 hours from Friday through today. It's why there was no post on my other blog yesterday and why there won't be one for today either.
So here's what I've been up to in the past week:
What I Read Last Week:
-Foop! by Chris Genoa
-They Eat Puppies, Don't They? by Christopher Buckley
-The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman
What I'm Currently Reading:

What's Been Going On Over at The Mind of Gabe?
-Monday was a post that had been originally written for this blog: Teach a Man to Fish: Cultural Illiteracy and the Decline of the Informed American
-Tuesday I talked about how living with people can make you sick...literally: Relationships Are Like Petri Dishes
-Wednesday I ranted about income inequality: Income Inequality: The Rich Kids of Instagram
-Friday is Fandom Friday at The Mind of Gabe. I shared a fun bit of Doctor Who fan art I found on the web.
-Saturday I shared my thoughts on the audacious claims by Hostess that the Bakers' Union strike was to blame for their going out of business: Are You Kidding Me, Hostess?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
I'm always excited when I'm able to do an It's Monday! What Are You Reading? post because it means that I, you know, actually read something.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey and is a a chance for book bloggers to share what they read last week, what they are currently reading, and what they are reading next. It's also an opportunity for us to share other things that we did during the week.
I finally finished the book that I had been reading for, like, two weeks and then managed to read a second book in a grand total of about four hours. Granted, one was over 500 pages and one was barely over 200, but it still should not have taken me a couple of weeks to read one book. I have absolutely no discipline or skill at planning my time. Must work on this. :)
What I Read Last Week:
-Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein (review will be posted on Wednesday)
-You by Charles Benoit (review will be posted on Friday)
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Foop! by Chris Genoa
What I'm Reading Next:
-Royal Flush by Scott Bartlett
-They Eat Puppies, Don't They? by Christopher Buckley

Reading time has been so hard to come by in the past week because of all the hours I'm working. I feel really glad now that there are a ton of books that I never reviewed after I read them because I can go back and dig into those when I haven't finished anything.
This past week I finally finished The Star Diaries by Stanislaw Lem and I started reading Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. I still need to find time to plop myself down in front of my computer so that I can read Something New, an e-book that I've had on my "Reading Now" list for weeks. (I promise I'll get to it this week, Ms. Lott!) This week I'll be tackling those two novels. After that, I have another e-book, Royal Flush by Scott Bartlett, to read and will be jumping into You by Charles Benoit. He apparently lives in the Rochester area and stopped in at the bookstore where I work. We got to talking about Banned Books Week and he mentioned that his novel had been banned at a school in Florida. My library happened to have a copy so I figured I'd give it a go.
What are all of you reading this week?

Last week was Banned Book Week and, unlike last year, this year I spent a ton of time talking about it. I read a couple of banned books and wrote several posts that talked about my views of the subject.
What I Read Last Week:
-Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
-Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison
What I'm Currently Reading:
-A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
-Pick Your Poison: How Our Mad Dash to Chemical Utopia Is Making Lab Rats of Us All by Monona Rossol
What I'm Reading Next:
-Something New by Malena Lott
-The Star Diaries by Stanislaw Lem
Bloggy Goodness
Last week I did a Top Ten Tuesday Double Feature with the second top ten list being a list of my favorite banned books. I wrote a post about why I think book banning is wrong. Finally, as part of the Book Blogger Hop, I talked about why I think we need to celebrate banned books year-round.
In other news, I added a review policy (finally) and an About Me page. I've also scheduled Top Ten Tuesday posts for the rest of the month, which is a first for me.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
Every Monday, Sheila at Book Journey hosts It's Monday! What Are You Reading? in which she asks bloggers to share what they read the week before, what they're currently reading, and what they plan on reading next.
I've been much more productive the last few weeks than I was the last time I posted for IMWAYR. I decided to knock out a few more books for the Books to Movies challenge, hosted by Two Bibliomaniacs and I also finally finished a trilogy that I've been working through the last several months.
So here, without further ado, is what I've been reading.
What I Read Last Week:
-Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer
-Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
-The Princess Bride by William Goldman (reread)
-That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind
-False Alarm: The Truth about the Epidemic of Fear by Marc Siegel
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Love Always by Ann Beattie
-Looking for Alaska by John Green
-The Never-Ending Story by Michael Ende (reread)
-The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
-Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris
-The Westing Game by Ellen Rankin (reread)
I'm trying to knock out about six books a week (although I know that I probably won't) so that I can reach my goal of 100 books for the year. We'll see how that goes.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?
Last week I read one book. And it was a short one. And I was disgusted with myself. In the hopes that this week I'll be much more successful, I've made myself draw up a reading list for the week, which means, of course, that I have full authority to participate in It's Monday! What Are You Reading?, which is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.
Every week, Sheila posts this meme, which invites bloggers to divulge what they delved into the previous week, what they're reading at the moment, and what they plan to read in the week ahead. I haven't been as good about joining in on IMWAYR lately, mostly because I haven't been as diligent about creating a reading list. I've just kind of been plopping myself down with whatever I felt like...which has led to me not reading much of anything. So, here's my list for this week.
What I Read Last Week:
-Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Love Always by Ann Beattie*
-Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos*
-Looking for Alaska by John Green*
-The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom*
-False Alarm: The Truth About the Epidemic of Fear by Marc Siegel
NOTE: Books marked with an (*) are books that a friend loaned me that I promised I would read and give back to her before the end of the year. I had no choice in what she gave me, but she's promised me that they're all good reads, so we'll see.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
It's Monday, which means it's time for It's Monday! What Are You Reading? hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. This weekly feature gives book bloggers the opportunity to share what they read the week before, what they're currently reading, and what they'll be reading during the coming week.
Now that I'm somewhat back in the swing of things, I've decided to try to pick up most of the memes I'd abandoned in the computer-less/internet-less limbo that has been the last few months of my life. As I'm still sans-internet (unless I pop down to the library), I may not be able to post every meme every week, but I'll do the best I can.

-2030: The Real Story of What Happens to America by Albert Brooks
-House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

What I Read Last Week:
-The Dark Enquiry by Deanna Raybourn
-2030: The Real Story of What Happens to America by Albert Brooks
-House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
What I'm Currently Reading:

What I'm Reading This Week:
-Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
It's Monday, which means it's time to take stock of what we're reading with Sheila's meme, hosted at Book Journey. It's Monday; What Are You Reading? is 100 posts old today and Sheila is celebrating with a give-away!
This past week I actually read quite a lot, although I didn't get through everything I was planning on reading. This means that you guys can look forward to reviews this week (as long as I get a chance to, you know, write them).
What I Read Last Week:
-Dark Road to Darjeeling by Deanna Raybourn
-Where Do Comedians Go When They Die: Journeys of a Stand-Up by Milton Jones
-Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon
-Bossypants by Tina Fey
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Maskerade by Terry Pratchett
-Failed States by Noam Chomsky
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Coffee at Little Angels by Nadine Rose Larter (review requested by author)
-Dune by Frank Herbert
-The Book of Mordred by Vivian Vande Velde
-The Astronomer's Universe: Stars, Galaxies, and Cosmos by Herbert Friedman
I also watched the film Wonder Boys, and will be reviewing that in conjunction with the novel for a challenge I'm a little bit behind on.
Happy reading everyone!

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?
"Guess who's back (back, back)?
Back again ('gain, 'gain).
Gabe is back (back, back).
Tell a friend (friend, friend)."
That's right, boys and girls. I'm actually posting something. Please, please, hold your applause.
July was an insanely crappy month in which I barely did anything on this blog and ended up not meeting any of my challenge goals...at all. Here's hoping August is a *lot* better.
So, it's Monday and, for the first time in way too long, that means it's time for "It's Monday! What Are You Reading?," hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. I can once again tell you all what I've been reading, what I am reading, and what I will be reading.
What I Read Last Week:
-On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony (review posted tomorrow)
What I'm Reading Now:
-Failed States by Noam Chomsky
-Dark Road to Darjeeling by Deanna Raybourn
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Perelandra by C.S. Lewis
-Where do Comedians Go When They Die?: Journeys of a Stand-Up by Milton Jones
-Incarceron by Catherine Fisher
-Bossypants by Tina Fey
If I get a chance to work on my blog tomorrow (meaning: if I get a chance to get to the library), I'll be updating some stuff that hasn't been updated in several weeks...if not longer.
Look for my review of On a Pale Horse tomorrow!

It's Monday; What Are You Reading?
I'm back to doing It's Monday! What Are You Reading? now that I've actually read some books this past week. The week before I had literally read nothing so it seemed sort of a waste of people's time to throw my link in. They'd get here and be like, "Wow, this guy read nothing. How exciting."
Anyway, this weekly meme is hosted by the lovely Sheila at Book Journey. Each Monday book bloggers show off what they've read, what they're currently reading, and what they're planning on reading in the coming week.
What I Read Last Week:
-Death: A Life by George Pendle
-Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach
-The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
-Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman (review posted Tuesday)
-Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis (review posted Wednesday)
-A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess (review posted Thursday)
What I'm Currently Reading:
-The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
-Imajica by Clive Barker
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
-Incarceron by Catherine Fisher
-Possession by A.S. Byatt
-Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds
This week I should also be posting my tentative reading list for July as well as posting the next poll as to which book should be added to that reading list. Once again I'm having you guys vote on one of the titles that was suggested to me in May (see this post). This month's winner, The Book Thief is incredible and I have you guys to thank for my reading it. I haven't figured out which four you'll be choosing between, but you'll know in the next few days.
EDIT: I had completely forgotten to list A Clockwork Orange, which I read on Sunday. I read so much last week that my brain apparently fried. :)

It's Monday; What Are You Reading?
It's Monday and that means it's time for a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. "It's Monday! What Are You Reading?" is a chance for book bloggers to share what they've been reading, what they are reading, and what they will be reading, as well as any other tidbits they'd like to share.
For once in the history of my blog, I didn't actually read anything last week. I took a week-long reading break, although I kept blogging as usual. Therefore, I'll only be sharing my current read and what I'm planning for this coming week.
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Imajica by Clive Barker (reread)
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach
-Incarceron by Catherine Fisher
I know it's a pretty short list, but Imajica is over 800 pages long and is going to take me several days to finish. I've still got a pretty decent list of books left to read this month and I've signed up to do a read-a-thon during which I'm planning to read four books, so you'll still get plenty of reviews from me in June.
What are you guys all reading?

It's Monday; What Are You Reading?
Hello, all! I'm still in the middle of my short reading break and am almost finished rewatching the first season of Alias. But today is Monday and that means that it's time once again for It's Monday! What Are You Reading? hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.
Every Monday, Sheila brings together book bloggers from all over the world to share what they read the week before, what they are currently reading, and what they plan to read in the coming week. Many bloggers also choose to share what they've been blogging about the past week or, really, anything they feel like sharing.
Today, I'm sharing a lesson that I learned last week: authors read blogs. To be fair, I knew that this probably happened but to me, especially since I'm still so new at this, that sort of thing happened to other, more established bloggers. Nope. I received a very polite e-mail last week from Jackie Morse Kessler regarding two reviews that I had written about the first two books in her Horsemen of the Apocalypse series. While I wasn't too kind in my review of Hunger, I was much more impressed with Rage.
Her e-mail was to thank me for my reviews and to explain to me why she didn't use very much physical description, something that I had taken issue with while reading her novels. She was in no way rude or condescending and I stepped away from the encounter not only unscathed, but also with a new understanding. She said that she appreciated my candor (and I have no intention of not being honest in a review) but e-mailing her back and forth gave me an appreciation for what authors have to deal with when they read reviews of their books. She said it herself--you can't please everyone.
I do, however, think that it's important for me as a reviewer to remember that authors do what they do for the enjoyment of it. As a writer, myself, I know that the stories that I put down on paper are, in the end, for me. They're what I enjoy or else I wouldn't have written it down in the first place. While I may not like a book that I read (see my review of The Road for an example of that), I should remember that there are people out there who do, not the least of which is the author. So, no, I won't beat around the bush if I hate a book or, even, if I mildly dislike it. I don't think anyone wants me to be dishonest. I will, however, always be mindful of the fact that somewhere out there is a writer who slaved over that book and who, while wanting criticism, is also looking for encouragement.
Okay, now for the books:
What I Read Last Week:
-Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman
-Rage by Jackie Morse Kessler
-The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Working for the Devil by Lilith Saintcrow
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Incarceron by Catherine Fisher
-Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach
-Imajica by Clive Barker
-Dead Man Rising by Lilith Saintcrow

It's Monday; What Are You Reading?
It's Monday (okay, it's actually Sunday but I have to be up early tomorrow so I won't be staying up to write this at the stroke of midnight), and this week I'm completely okay with that. Last Monday I was incredibly distressed to realize that I had read a whopping two books. This week, thanks to not having to drive all over the country, I was much more able to sit down and actually read.
For me, Monday is synonymous with It's Monday! What Are You Reading, hosted by the always delightful Sheila at Book Journey. Each week, book bloggers from all over share what they read last week, what they are currently reading, what they're planning of reading next, and anything else they feel like sharing.
What I Read Last Week:
-Hunger by Jackie Morse Kessler
-The Engines of God by Jack McDevitt
-Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman
-Rage by Jackie Morse Kessler
-The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis (recommended by Nonners)
-Working for the Devil by Lilith Saintcrow (reread)
As you can see by my last choice, I'm finally going to start the Dante Valentine series by Lilith Saintcrow. I'm pretty sure that I won't be reading all five of them in a row, but, rather, will be doing one a week. I still have a few books left over from my May reading list that will be carried over into June. The reading list for next month should be up by the end of this week.
So, what are you reading?

It's Monday; What Are You Reading?
For once in my blogging life I'm like, "Crap, it's Monday already?" This is because I am nowhere near where I wanted to be in terms of reading and I won't get caught up anytime soon.
My problem is, obviously, that I'm picking too many books to read each month. I'm suffering from the literary equivalent of my eyes being bigger than my stomach. The other issue is that because I plan to read so much each week I end up suffering from reader's fatigue by about Friday.
So, I didn't get through everything I wanted to last week and am probably going to carry books from this month over into next month...and not pick 16 books to read ever again. It's just not going to happen.
Okay, I'm done blathering and am ready to announce that it is, in fact, Monday and that means that it's time for It's Monday! What Are You Reading?, which is hosted by the amazing Sheila over at Book Journey. Every Monday, tons of bloggers share what they read the week before, what they're planning on reading this coming week, and anything else they feel like talking about.
What I Read Last Week:
-Cosi Fan Tutti by Michael Dibdin
-Barrel Fever by David Sedaris (Review posts at 10:00 am)
That's right, folks, I read a whole whopping two books last week. My original goal from last week's It's Monday post was five and a half (the half being the first twelve books of the Iliad). I've given up on rereading Homer's epic poem (for now) because I just didn't give myself enough time and I was supposed to have had the first half read by, um, today. I am, however, going to carry over the three remaining books from last week, so:
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
-Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
-The Engines of God by Jack McDevitt
If I get through these three then I'll be adding in some more of the books that are left on my list for May. Any that don't get read this month will become the list for June.

It's Monday; What Are You Reading?
It's Monday once again. Last week I was on vacation so I wasn't able to participate in It's Monday! What Are You Reading?, hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, and I have to say that I missed it.
Every Monday, book bloggers take stock of what they've read the previous week, what they are currently reading and what they are planning on reading.
Last week was, as you probably know, Villain Week, due to my being out-of-state for a few days. I did not, however, stop reading during my vacation and managed to get through three books. I was hoping to get through five but I ended up driving for most of the trip, which amounted to approximately 1800 miles in three days. For having been in a car most of the week, I'd say three books is pretty darn good.
What I Read Last Week:
-A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering American on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson
-The Complaints by Ian Rankin
(Review to be posted at 10 AM Tuesday)
-Numb by Sean Ferrell
(Review to be posted at 10 AM Wednesday)
What I'm Currently Reading:
-Cosà Fan Tuttì by Michael Dibdin
What I'm Reading This Week:
-Barrel Fever by David Sedaris
-The Iliad by Homer (books 1-12 for A Literary Odyssey's read-along)
-Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
-Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
-The Engines of God by Jack McDevitt
