"60 Minutes" Asks Tough Questions About "Three Cups of Tea"

I'm feeling quite a bit better although I'm really really weak from not having eaten since Friday night. And that, boys and girls, means that I scoured the internet for a book-related news story. And I found one.

I started reading Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson last year and never got around to finishing it. It's in the TBR pile so it will be presumably read someday. Clicking this link will take you to a New York Times article about tonight's episode of 60 Minutes. A report will be featured about possible inaccuracies in Mortenson's book and will call into question the number of schools that his organization, Central Asia Institute, has built. The report purports that the organization "has taken credit for building schools that don't exist."

Anyone think that Oprah will bring him on and yell at him like she did to James Frey?

  1. I think this was the one that was originally published under a woman's name too... I have it somewhere on my TBR.

  2. I'm not sure. If the 60 Minutes is true than I'll be truly disappointed because I sincerely believed in Mortensen's work and mission in Central Asia.
Why can't people just be honest about what they do? A good deed is a good deed, there's no need to make it seem more than it already is... *sigh*

  3. pwb: I'm not sure about that. It may have been.

MA: I agree, although people want to make themselves look better than they are. Even those who make a difference try to gloss over the bad bits and talk up the good bits. Even if parts of his story are untrue, I'm not sure that that would negate all the good he has done. It would just make me more skeptical, I guess.

If anyone *does* watch the report, feel free to leave a post about it in the comments.
